Volunteers Prepare Meals To Philadelphians Battling Life Threatening Illnesses
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Volunteers spent their Thanksgiving morning preparing and delivering holiday meals to hundreds of Philadelphians battling life threatening illnesses.
Hundreds of volunteers were preparing, packaging and delivering holiday meals of turkey and all the trimmings including dessert, for hundreds of households.
"I mean we are only here for a couple of hours, it's kind of the least we can do and it is thanksgiving and to be thankful for what you have and to help others," said volunteer Michele Garrity.
The recipients of the meals are MANNA clients, those facing life threatening illnesses. MANNA does this kind of work year round but on Thanksgiving, thanks to the generosity of others the non- profit is able to meet its clients needs.
The meals were funded through the sale of MANNA pies. About 8,000 pie in the sky desserts were sold in the region. Organizers said the tremendous support enabled the organization to reach 750 homes this year that's 200 more than last year, making it the biggest Thanksgiving day effort in MANNA's 19 year history.
