Volunteers Needed To Help Restore Historic African-American Cemetery
COLLINGDALE, Pa. (CBS) - A cleanup scheduled for Saturday will kick off a campaign to restore Eden Cemetery in Delaware County, the nation's oldest African-American cemetery.
Created in 1902, Eden Cemetery on Springfield Road in Collingdale, Pa. is the nation's oldest African-American cemetery. But over the years, the cemetery has been attacked by vandalism and racist graffiti.
Saturday, volunteers will set overturned headstones, paint the gates, clear debris and plant gardens. Todd Bernstein is president of Global Citizen, part of a coalition of organizations that will work to restore the historic resting place.
"The more people know about the significance of this national landmark, the more people of all ages and backgrounds are interested in joining forces to help support and protect it."
