Volunteers Needed For Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania
By Kim Glovas
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania is already underway, and the state department of transportation is looking for volunteers to help spruce up the commonwealth.
The cleanup actually began on March 1 and continues through the end of May. PennDOT's Jamie Legenos says anyone can take part.
"It can be Girl Scouts, sports teams, your bowling league," she says, "even just some buddies that like to get together to make Pennsylvania a beautiful place to live."
The cleanup is sponsored by PennDOT, the department of Environmental Protection and other agencies which will also provide volunteers with gloves, trash bags and safety vests. Legenos says however, the weather isn't cooperating yet this year.
"Over the winter, you don't see the litter that's accumulating on the roadways," she says, "but as spring approaches, it becomes quite clear that littering is still a problem in our state."
Last year, nearly 6.5 million pounds of litter was collected throughout the state.
