POTTSTOWN, Pa. (CBS) - It was a celebration of the spirit of Christmas in Montgomery County Tuesday night, where volunteers served up a holiday feast for hundreds of families in need.
There was carol singing, prayer, food and hundreds of gifts as the Chosen 300 in Mount Olive Baptist Church in Pottstown, Pa. hosted a Christmas Eve celebration for dozens of families and homeless who otherwise would go without.
"A lot of children here are from homes that are struggling, making decisions, 'Do I pay my rent or feed my children?' Gifts are really not on the itinerary," says Brian Jenkins, with Chosen 300.
This year, charities like this one have been struggling with donations, and Christmas almost wasn't so merry for the less fortunate.
"Last week we only had 40 gifts," Jenkins says. "Now, we have over 300. Every child is going to be able to get three to four gifts and have something to open under the tree."
Volunteers gave their time Tuesday serving a three-course meal and dessert to dozens of families so they could spend a little time together.
"It's a nice place, glad to be here," said one youngster who was at the event with his family. "I had to move twice in a row, so I'm happy I get to do this."
Every little bit goes a long way in the hearts of those giving and receiving.
Thanks to several surprise donations, every child at the church went home with more than enough.
It's not just on Christmas Eve that the Chosen 300 serves this community, but every day of the year.
