Volunteers Help Revitalize School In Strawberry Mansion

by John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- When the elementary students at Ethel Allen Promise Academy in the Strawberry Mansion section of the city go back to school on Monday, they may be wondering if their in the right place.

That's because 800 volunteers spent their Saturday transforming it.

Wells Fargo volunteers joined City Year Philadelphia AmeriCorps members to create an inspiring learning environment for children attending the Ethel Allen Promise Academy.

There were projects going on all over the place, including the building of two playgrounds, revitalizing the baseball field,
and painting hallways and stairwells.

Darryl Bundrige is the executive director and vice president of City Year Philadelphia says this effort is an example of the importance of private/public partnerships.

"It's really what we all should be doing to leverage the talents and skills and the resources of both sides to move things forward in our country, and if you look at over time, so many of the great things that have happened have been through private/public partnerships," said Bundrige

Wells Fargo will soon be unveiling a special gift to the kids: Ethel Allen gets its first mascot. Allen Gator will meet the kids on Monday.
