PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A carjacking in Philadelphia ended with a police chase and gunfire early Friday morning.
The incident began at about 11 p.m. in Southwest Philadelphia when the 19-year-old suspect violently attacked and carjacked the owner of a 2014 Kia Sorento.
At about 1 a.m., police spotted the stolen vehicle around 56th Street and Springfield Avenue.
"The driver refused to stop, took off at a high rate of speed and lost control," Chief Inspector Scott Small explained.
Police say the man crashed the brand new Kia into a parked car.
"Caused major damage to the front end of that 2014 Kia Sorento," Small said.
The suspect allegedly tried to run. An officer was forced to open fire on the suspect before he was taken into custody.
"The suspect was not struck by police gunfire. There were no injuries to the suspect," Small explained.
The suspect is facing a laundry list of charges.
The victim of the carjacking was taken to a local hospital to get treatment for a head wound he suffered when the suspect pistol-whipped him.
When police made the arrest, they brought the victim to the scene who positively identified the suspect.
The incident remains under investigation.
