Vineland High School Freshman Killed In Collision, Marking Second Student Death In Two Weeks
VINELAND, N.J. (CBS) -- Grief counselors are helping students at a South Jersey high school deal with the death of another classmate.
A 14-year-old student at Vineland High School was killed in a crash on Almond Road in Vineland, Cumberland County.
On Monday evening, Vineland Police were called out for a serious collision in area of Almond Road and Mill Road.
A 2004 Chevy Malibu was traveling east bound on Almond Road when the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a 1986 GMC Truck that was parked off the roadway.
Jermire Lowery, 14, was seriously injured as result of the crash and was transported to Inspira Medical Center where he died as a result of his injuries.
The driver of the vehicle is 17-years-old and from Vineland, NJ. The driver, along with four additional juveniles, was transported to Inspira for non-life threatening injuries.
Police Chief Timothy Codispoti says, "There's indication that a deer may have been involved, but we are looking at everything."
This is the second freshman tragedy in just two weeks for the high school. (See Related Story)
School officials held a moment of silence today and made grief counselors available.
John Sbrana of Vineland Public Schools says, "We have counselors going to every classroom to tell the kids in person what happened. We are also sending a letter home to parents letting them know what happened, and that we are going to have services provided."
Andre Robertson, a student, says describes Lowery as, "One of my closest friends. We knew each other for three years but we were close. He was athletic, he was part of the basketball team, so we had a connection there."
No charges have been filed at this time.
