Villanova Professor Says Bin Laden Death Gives Country Short-Term Boost
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A local professor says the events surrounding the capture and death of Osama bin Laden have had a positive influence on the country but reality will soon set back in.
Lara Brown, assistant professor of political science at Villanova, says there is no doubt the entire nation was captivated by the demise of international enemy number one.
"The capture and killing of Osama bin Laden is a positive development. (It has been) beneficial for our country. It brings resolution to many years of outstanding uncertainty about al Qaeda and the war on terror," Brown said.
Brown says President Obama has also received a boost. She cites a Quinnipiac poll, last week, which showed the President getting higher marks.
"The country has reassessed President Obama's on competency and job approval and their feelings about how he's doing as president but they haven't necessarily changed their opinion on how things are going with the economy," Brown said.
She adds, unemployment is still high, the economy is still dragging along and, even though a drop in gas prices is predicted, it's still a painful process to fill up the tank. Brown says these are issues that Americans deal with on a daily basis and our lives are not governed by a single event.
