Vigil Held For Slain Gloucester County Woman
Family and friends gathered Wednesday evening to remember a Gloucester County woman who was murdered earlier this week.
A vigil was held for 22-year-old Nicole Ayres at Stauffer Field in Deptford. Ayres' body was discovered on a soccer field in Southampton Township on Monday. She had been stabbed multiple times.
Approximately 200 people gathered at Stauffer Field where Ayres once starred as a softball star. She graduated from Deptford High School and went to Fordham University.
"Everybody here loved Nicole … there was poems read and letters read and people putting candles down in her number down on the mound," friend Jacquelyn Deak said.
Steven Headley, 28, of Florence, has been charged in Ayres' death.
Headley is being held under guard at a Trenton hospital. Authorities say he's being treated for broken bones suffered when he was hit by a pickup truck Monday night after running out of his mother's house in Pemberton Township and into the road.
