Vietnam Veterans Memorial Vandalized
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Front and Spruce streets has been vandalized many times in the past. The latest act of destruction happened on one of the busiest weekends of the summer.
Jim Moran, custodian of the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial, said he went to the site Sunday evening and noticed that a large sign hung on the Spruce street side of the Memorial had been damaged.
"I walked out to Spruce Street and the sign looked like it was coming apart, so I walked up from Front Street and looked at the sign, and someone stole 18-feet of the sign that said "Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial". They stole "Philadelphia" right off the sign. They cut it right out. It looked like it was razor cut."
Moran said this weekend was the opening of the Welcome America festivities so there were tons of people down near the waterfront. He said if anyone saw anything between Friday night and Sunday afternoon, or if they see the 18 foot canvas sign anywhere, they should call police.
