V.E.T.S. Program Gives Aspiring Veterinarians Real-Life Experience

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It's the second year that Penn's School of Veterinary Medicine is running a summer camp for high school and college students with career interests in veterinary medicine.

Nearly 20 college students from across the country were listening to a lecture on working dogs, in particular, scent dogs. A live demonstration followed.

It's a part of the Veterinary Exploration Through Sciences, or VETS, program.

Rosanne Herpen, the program director, says, "they actually rotate in the small animal hospital and some of the rotations include Cardiology, Medicine, Dentistry and Oral Surgery, Emergency Services and Surgery/Orthopedics."

She says there are labs in Pathology, Developmental Biology and Anatomy. A trip to the new Bolton Center in Chester County is also on the schedule, where a variety of material is covered, including new treatments and diagnostic measures for large-animal diseases.

"Those students who are applying to veterinary school, they are able to have access to admissions and learn about the admissions process."

Three members of last year's program are attending Penn's School of Veterinary Medicine in the fall.
