Veteran Launches Designated Driving Service That Promises To Get Customers And Their Cars Home Safely

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A new designated driver service now operating in Philadelphia and South New Jersey promises to get customers and their cars home safely just in time for New Year's celebrations.
The company, called 2 Drunk Drivers, launched back in August and was founded by an Iraq war veteran who now employs other vets.
Customers can use social media to reach out to 2DD, or call, or text them. A driver will then show up, take the customer's keys, and then drive them, and their car, safely home.
The drivers always stand out in their bright pink polos, which are not the kind of uniforms the vets are used to wearing.
"When people know that we're soldiers, they feel safer than just a random stranger driving your car," said Gabriel Washington from behind the wheel. "[Customers think] we're also soldiers. Okay, I can trust this guy or girl."
Washington, 26, spent six years in the Army, and served in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
He said his training prepared him to handle all kinds of cars and situations, and also the importance of leaving no one behind.
"Let's just say we drop you off and just leave. I feel like that would be on us if something bad happens to you. So making sure that you get into your home safely, that's the whole experience right there."
Initial pick up can start at $30, with an additional $2.50 per mile.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving calls New Year's Eve one of the most dangerous days on the road. A time when alcohol and poor judgment can have life-altering consequences. It's a challenge Washington is willing to take on.
"I just love being out there helping and knowing I'm making a difference. These DUI's and these accidents are a pretty serious thing."
