Vegan Donut Shop A Reality In Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It's a new day for vegans in West Philadelphia, with the grand opening of a...donut shop.
Dottie's Donuts has developed a cult following. The vegan donuts have been found at area cafes over the last year and a half.
Now, Dottie's is opening its own shop next to its commercial bakery at 4529 Springfield Avenue.
Co-owner Jeff Poleon says a vegan donut tastes a lot like a regular donut:
"We use coconut milk at this point. And other than that, we use an egg replacer that's based on corn starch and tapioca starch."
He says Dottie's serves a daily variety of flavors:
"Raspberry lemon, we've got a powdered sugar, we've got a classic vanilla bean glaze, cinnamon sugar, coconut milk chocolate, lemon poppy, Earl Grey, milk chocolate with roasted cacao. The green one is matcha pistachio."
Poleon says a former boss convinced him and partner Matt Quinn that Philadelphia needed vegan donuts. He says now, their goal of opening their own shop is a reality.
The grand opening is today.
