Utah Senator Mike Lee: 'We Need To Remember Why The Constitution Was Adopted'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Rich Zeoli talked with Utah Senator Mike Lee on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT about his new book, Our Lost Constitution: The Willful Subversion of America's Founding Document.
Lee said he sees the focus of our government has shifted its priorities and needs to return to what the Founding Fathers intended.
"I believe that our Constitution is what has fostered the development of the greatest civilization the world has ever known and after four and a half years of serving in the United States Senate, I've seen that in many respects, we're drifting from it. We're drifting from it in part because we've ceased to talk about it as a political document. We need to remember the reasons why it was adopted. We need to become more familiar with the stories underlying it so we can restore it to its position of prominence in our society."
He stated he hopes the book will connect with readers in a way that many conversations about the Constitution do not.
"It's much easier to talk about the Constitution and have people understand it when, instead of just talking about it in the abstract, instead of just quoting the language, we tell the stories behind key provisions."
Lee also spends a large portion of the book dealing with the gun rights of American citizens.
"I've devoted an entire chapter of my book, Our Lost Constitution, to the Second Amendment. I explain where it came from. I explain that it has its roots in what was known as the The Glorious Revolution of 1688 in England when King William and Queen Mary ascended to the thrown and restored the right of English subjects to bare arms for their own self defense."
