US Senate Candidates in N.J. Agree To Rare South Jersey Debate Venue
By David Madden
GLASSBORO, N.J. (CBS) -- The two men seeking to replace the late Frank Lautenberg as US senator from New Jersey will be debating in a rare location: South Jersey.
It's unusual that a statewide debate is held south of Trenton. But Rowan University hosted a gubernatorial debate a dozen years ago, and that apparently has convinced Cory Booker and Steve Lonegan to appear there this year.
"We were able to partner with NBC and the Philadelphia Inquirer," says university spokesman Joe Cardona, "and we contacted both campaigns. And after a few weeks they both agreed."
They'll meet October 9th, one week before the special election (see related story). The encounter will air live on Channel 10 and on line.
People will also be able to submit questions that will be reviewed by panelists.
CBS is sponsoring its own debate in October, between Governor Chris Christie and opponent Barbara Buono, at William Patterson University -- date and time to be announced.
