US Postal Service Weighing Closure of Tredyffrin Mail Processing Facility
TREDYFFRIN TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) - The US Postal Service says it is launching a study that could result in the closing of its mail processing center in Tredyffrin Township (Chester County) and the consolidation of those operations at a site in Southwest Philadelphia.
USPS spokeswoman Cathy Yarosky says local managers will study operations at the Southeastern Pennsylvania Mail Processing Center on Valley Road. To what possible end?
"Moving or consolidating those processes into our Philadelphia Processing and Distribution Center, which is located on Lindbergh Boulevard in Southwest Philadelphia," she told KYW Newsradio today.
Yarosky says the Tredyffrin site employs more than 725 workers and processes about six million pieces of mail per day.
She says the Southwest Philadelphia site, which was built in 2006, processes about the same amount of mail and employs more than 1,900 workers.
Yarosky concedes that if the Tredyffrin site closes, there are likely to be furloughs, although many workers could be offered transfers.
