US Navy Lends A Hand To Philadelphia For 'Navy Week'
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Twenty American cities including Philadelphia are celebrating "Navy Week" this week, and community service is a big part of the celebration.
In West Fairmount Park this morning, Mayor Michael Nutter (second from left) welcomed members of the US Navy at the Carousel House for the first of two days of community renovations, including cement resurfacing, planting, and painting inside and out.
"This is a great opportunity for us to reach out and say thank you for your support of the Navy, and a great opportunity for citizens of this region to meet our men and women in uniform and get a sense for what it's like to be able to serve your United States Navy," says Rear Admiral Scott Weikert (center of photo).
US Navy servicemembers will be at the Phillies game on Thursday afternoon and will visit a number of schools in the region before heading off to Millville, NJ for a number of Navy events in time for Memorial Day.
