US Eliminated By Belgium Despite 16 Saves From Howard

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The United States fell to Belgium, 2-1, in World Cup Round of 16 on Tuesday.
Tim Howard was magnificent, making 12 saves in the first 90 minutes finishing with 16 saves overall, and the match was scoreless heading into extra time. Howard's 16 saves was the most in a World Cup match over the past 50 years.
"It's heartbreaking," Howard said after the match. "I don't think we could have given anymore. What a great game of football. We got beat by a really great team. It's heartache. It hurts."
Kevin De Bruyne of Belgium scored in the 92nd minute of extra time. Then in the 105th minute Romelo Lukaku scored a second goal for Belgium giving them a commanding 2-0 lead.
In the second period of extra time, Michael Bradley sent a beautiful pass to Julian Green, who entered the game as a sub in extra time, to cut the lead to 2-1 and give the U.S. a glimmer of hope in the 107th minute.
Despite a flurry of chances from the U.S., they fell short losing 2-1.
Fabian Johnson left the game for the U.S. in the first half due to injury. The speedy DeAndre Yedlin, 20, replaced Johnson and played well.
Belgium will play Argentina at 1pm E.T on Saturday.
