Two Sentenced In New Jersey For Human Trafficking Of Woman
CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — Two people have been sentenced to prison terms in New Jersey for recruiting a woman in North Carolina to work in the sex trade.
Camden County prosecutors say 43-year-old Van Howell of Sicklerville, New Jersey and 31-year-old Krista Burton, of Philadelphia, both received five-year sentences. They had pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges of conspiracy to commit human trafficking.
Prosecutors say the pair paid for a bus ticket so the then-26-year-old woman could come to New Jersey. Prosecutors say the two told her she was expected to earn money for them through sex and caused her to believe that she would suffer consequences if she didn't.
The defendants also took control of the victim's cell phone and left her without the means to leave.
