PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia police are still looking for a suspect in a Friday afternoon shooting in Grays Ferry that left 45-year old women Clarice Douglass dead, and a 22-year old man wounded.
Police say they found Douglass shot once in the back of the head inside of a home on South Corlies Street. They say she was an innocent bystander killed by a stray bullet from a running gun-battle between two men.
"She was in the middle of the block, she was walking back towards her house. And the two individuals started shooting at each other. She was caught in the middle of the crossfire and she got shot several times," says Homicide Captain James Clark.
Police located one of those men a few blocks away on the 1400 block of Patton Street.
He had been shot in the arm three-times and also had a gunshot wound to his side, the result of a shoot-out in which police estimate that 18-shots were fired.
Both victims were taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where Douglass was pronounced dead. The male victim is in critical, but stable condition, and is being held for police questioning.
Police estimate 18 shots were fired in the battle, and say they found a 45 caliber handgun nearby in a trashcan. Investigators are still searching for the other suspect involved.
On Saturday evening, family members held a vigil for Douglass, who they say was just waiting for her two children to return home from school. The victim's mother, Mary, was at a loss for words when asked about her daughter.
"All I can say is she is going to be missed," said Mary, who remembers being outside with her daughter only a minute before she was shot.
Neighbors are praying for the family and peace in the community. The violence, they say, is out of hand.
