Two-Day Conference Focuses On Tick-Borne Diseases in Pennsylvania and Beyond

HERSHEY, Pa. (CBS) -- Physicians from around Pennsylvania and the Delaware Valley region are meeting tonight and tomorrow in Hershey, Pa. to learn about Lyme and other tick-borne diseases.
Getting a tick bite can be serious, and it may take years to diagnose the resulting disease, according to Julia Wagner, president of the Pennsylvania Lyme Resource Network.
She says that more than 100 doctors at this weekend's conference will learn the best ways to help sick patients.
"They're going to learn about new ways to diagnose, much broader sets of symptoms -- most people don't know there are very significant neurological effects," Wagner tells KYW Newsradio. "Doctors will learn about the expanded understanding of the symptoms and also be introduced to co-infections, some of which have very high fatality rates."
She adds that tick-borne diseases, including Lyme, are on the rise, and Pennsylvania leads in the number of reported case of these illnesses.
