Twitter Trying To Get Users To Expand Their 'Follows'
By Melony Roy
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (CBS) -- If you feel like you are missing out on some great tweets or unsure about whom to "follow," you're probably not alone.
In response, Twitter has rolled out a new feature that will recommend other accounts for you to follow, based on certain details of your own and others' Twitter usage.
It's based on an experiment called @MagicRecs, which monitors people in a Twitter user's network to send out occasional direct messages recommending new accounts to follow.
Twitter for Android and iPhone users will receive recommendations through a push notification if a number of accounts in their network begin to follow someone new, retweet, or favorite the same tweet.
The move comes ahead of Twitter's initial public stock offering (see related story) and is part of its effort to get users to be more engaged and spend more time on the service.
