Twitter Releases Guide Of Do's And Don'ts For Politicians
By Melony Roy
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Twitter has released a handbook for elected officials and hopefuls on how to successfully use the site.
"Twitter recognizes that it has an opportunity to expand its presence both in government and on the campaign trail," says political consultant Mark Nevins. "I think they recognize there is more they can do to work with elected officials and candidates, and I expect in the years ahead we'll see more of this from them."
The guide includes a list of do's and don'ts of the kinds of messages that will have a better chance of engagement.
"You should communicate on Twitter the same way you would face to face, so if you don't tell jokes in public don't tell jokes on Twitter. You need to be comfortable with the sort of communication you're delivering or its going to fall flat."
The Twitter guide also recommends sharing behind the scene information, but Nevis warns that could be a double-edged sword.
"Sometimes sharing too much information can be just as dangerous as not sharing enough," he said.
Twitter also suggests refuting critics during debates, providing Election Day info on polling locations and disclosing the candidate's scheduled public appearances.
