PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Dozens of people are dead after an 8.9 earthquake rocked Japan.
The impact is being felt all the way across the Pacific Ocean. A tsunami is expected to hit Hawaii, and the entire west coast of the United States is under a tsunami warning, the first waves are expected to arrive sometime around 10 a.m. eastern.
COVERAGE FROM CBS San Francisco
Ty Leong is a former Villanova student who resided in Philadelphia while she attended school on the Main Line. She says sirens warning residents of low-lying areas to evacuate have sounded several times.
"I was concerned. We had this happen last year and it actually amounted to nothing and we were prepared. But people seem to be more frantic this time than they were for last year's tsunami when there was an earthquake in Chile."
Leong says she and many others are glued to radios, listening for updates. She notes people in low coastal areas have been told to evacuate. Supermarkets are crowded as residents stock up on food, water, and batteries for portable radios.
Many people are seeking shelter inland with friends, relatives or at government shelters.
She says she feels safe being on the 37th floor of an apartment hi-rise.
