Trump, Biden Attend Penn Graduation Ceremony
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - They may be on opposite sides of the aisle, but Sunday, two political powerhouses came together to cheer on the Class of 2016.
Vice President Joe Biden and Republican presidential front runner Donald Trump attended the College of Arts and Sciences graduation ceremony at the University of Pennsylvania.
It was a major security event, with people having to go through metal detectors and getting their bags searched.
The Trumps and the Bidens caused a stir in the stands during the commencement ceremony.
"We saw Trump come in and instantly could recognize him because of his hair," said Pam Margulies of Columbus, Ohio. "We have a camera that has a zoom lens. We got pictures of them and then, when everyone started clapping, we knew it was Biden coming in."
Arriving first to a mix of cheers and jeers, Trump took a break from the campaign trail to see daughter, Tiffany, graduate with a degree in Sociology.
Vice President Biden and wife, Jill, arrived just before the 6:30 p.m. ceremony to a very warm reception.
"We know that the vice president, his granddaughter is here, so we were very excited to see him," said Julane Lowe-Hamilton of West Chester, New York. "We're a fan of Joe Biden."
Later, a special moment for Biden's granddaughter Naomi, as her grandfather came onstage to present her International Relations degree.
The two high-profile families meant tons of secret service agents, TSA-type security and plenty of amateur paparazzi with phones out.
At the end of the day, the windy, unstable weather proved to be more disruptive than the special guests.
"The weather is not as nice as we would like it, but all in all, everyone here is very proud," Lowe-Hamilton said. "Lots of family and friends very proud of their graduates."
Both the Bidens and Trumps are Penn families. Biden's late son Beau graduated from Penn. Trump and three of his children are also Penn grads.
