Tropical Storm Andrea Moves Onshore
By the CBS3 Eyewitness Weather Team
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Tropical Storm Andrea is about 200 miles west of Tampa, Florida. Heavy rain is falling along the West Coast of Florida, and tropical storm force winds are beginning to move onshore. Max sustained winds in Andrea are 60 mph and it is picking up forward speed. The storm is now moving NE at 14 mph. Tropical Storm Watches and Warnings are in effect from coastal Florida and stretch as far north as the southern Maryland beaches.
Heavy rain accumulations are the main concern with this storm. Rainfall amounts of 4-8" are possible over the Florida Peninsula. Andrea will move northward over the next 24-48 hours, and the moisture from the storm will combine with an area of low pressure currently in the Midwest.
Impacts to the Delaware Valley
The Philadelphia area will see a significant amount of rain through most of Friday. The exact timing and placement of the storm is still a bit uncertain, but right now, it appears that a general 1-3" is likely across the Delaware and Lehigh Valleys. There can be higher amounts locally but not widespread.
The heavy rain can lead to urban and small stream flooding, but major river flooding is unlikely. Wind gusts along the coast could reach 50 mph (40 mph inland).
Thankfully, storm surge does not appear to be a major threat with this tropical storm. With the memories of Irene and Sandy still fresh in our minds, the CBS3 Eyewitness Weather Team will keep you posted until Andrea's impacts are out of the area.
