Trial Underway For Teen Accused Of Gunning Down WWII Vet
By Tony Hanson
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Trial is now underway in Philadelphia for a teen charged with murdering a World War Two veteran outside his Pickering Street home in the Northwest section of the city in August of 2010. India Spellman is 19-years-old now, she was 17 at the time of the crime.
Prosecutor Thomas Lipscomb has told the jury 87-year-old George Greaves survived the deadliest war in human history, only to be gunned down, shot once in the chest, in his driveway outside his home.
According to Lipscomb, Spellman and then 14-year-old Von Combs, who is testifying for the prosecution, had robbed another woman at gunpoint earlier in the day, before they killed Greaves during another robbery attempt.
Police say Spellman and Combs blamed each other for the shooting.
Combs was convicted in juvenile court. But Spellman has pleaded not guilty and her attorney has called Combs a liar, a bitter liar, and suggested police fabricated Spellman's alleged confession.
