Trayvon Martin's Dad Attends Event At Local University Honoring His Son

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Earlier this week, the Department of Justice announced no civil rights charges would be filed against George Zimmerman, the Florida neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed black teenager Trayvon Martin. Trayvon's father was at Arcadia University Saturday evening for an event celebrating his son's life.
It's been three years since Trayvon was killed. Saturday night, hundreds gathered for an event called 'Letters to Trayvon.' One of those guests was Trayvon's own father, Tracy.
"It's just an honor to be here," he said.
The event centered on an essay-writing contest. Young people were asked to write a letter to Trayvon about their feelings about his death.
"I actually had a chance to read one of the letters," Tracy said, "and I thought his letter was real interesting, it was kind of touching."
Students from Imhotep Charter School performed an artistic montage about Trayvon to begin the program.
"It kind of shook me up," says 18-year-old Jabari Tate. "I knew he was going to be here, and I prepared for it, but it's not going to haunt me, but it's going to be in the back of my mind like I really performed a piece about a man's son who died in front of him."
