Tour De Shore Bike Ride Raises Money For Children's Fund
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - More than 1,300 people will ride from Philadelphia to the Jersey Shore this weekend in the 24th annual Irish Pub Tour De Shore and the Montgomery County district attorney has bragging rights for assembling the largest team and raising the most amount of money.
The "Wheels of Justice" sometimes turn slowly in the courthouse, but these wheels will be speeding towards the finish line of a 65-mile trek Sunday from Philadelphia to Atlantic City.
Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman's team has 180 riders who raised more than $40,000 for organizations that help children of fallen officers.
"From little conversation here in the office three years ago, it has just grown exponentially," Ferman said. "It has turned into one of the largest most exciting projects that we undertake every year."
That first year she had 60 riders. What makes her team unique, she says, is that it's made up of Montgomery County law enforcement personnel united and committed to the goal of raising money for the Irish Pub Children's Foundation. Last year, the ride raised more than $250,000.
