Bell's Bike Shop
1320 E. Passyunk Ave.
Philadelphia, Pa.
888-901-9990

Despite a cramped warehouse-like shop, Bell's offers great service with fast turnaround and low prices. They're also willing to offer payment plans for large purchases—a huge plus when you're on a tight budget. Just FYI: the store recommends making an appointment before coming in.
Bicycle Stable
1420 Frankford Ave.
Philadelphia, Pa.
215-634-0633
www.bicyclestable.com
Bicycle Stable is truly a gem—they'll let you test drive your potential purchase around the block, and customers can't stop raving about their friendly, efficient, no BS service. One Yelp-er even writes of showing up to get a newly purchased bike fixed, only to find out it was stolen. Not only did Bicycle Stable do some sleuthing and return the bike to its original owner, but they called the customer who'd unintentionally purchased the stolen bike to make sure she'd gotten her money back! Old school values? Like!
Bicycle Therapy
2211 South St.
Philadelphia, Pa.
215-735-7849
www.bicycletherapy.com
Though some complain of a pretentious "hipster" vibe at this shop, it gets great reviews for knowledgeable sales staff and a bright, clean store. Plus, they not only carry a wide selection of single-speed bikes, but mountain and trail bikes as well.
Jay's Pedal Power Bicycle Shop
512 E. Girard Ave., Ste. 12
Philadelphia, Pa.
215-425-5111
www.jayspedalpower.com
Fun fact: as of 2010, Jay's was the only solar-powered store in Philadelphia. They carry both hard-to-find parts as well as more run-of-the-mill pieces, and their service is efficient and fairly priced. A comprehensive website (complete with a "Reasons You Should Shop Here" section) also helps customers navigate inventory and issues with their bikes.
Trophy Bikes
3131 Walnut St.
Philadelphia, Pa.
215-222-2020
www.trophybikes.com
Like Bicycle Stable, Trophy will let you take potential purchases for a spin before committing, and their mechanics know their stuff. The store is clean and has enough room for comfortable shopping, and cycling newbies are treated with respect. Though some of the merchandise at Trophy is on the pricey side, satisfied customers swear by the quality and service.
