With a hefty dose of American-Jewish flair, the cuisine might not be authentic Asian, but it's certainly fun. The hot dog bao buns are a must-try during happy hour Monday though Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 p.m. to midnight. Texas Wieners has a history in South Philadelphia going all the way back to 1923. The signature hot dog, "The Works," is grilled, served on a steamed club roll and topped with mustard, onions, and the secret Greek sauce for $2.50. The story is that a big food company tried to buy the recipe for the sauce in the 1930s, but owner Stephen Miller (originally Stephen Mandrohalos) would never share it. Other favorites include the Texas Tommy (a hot dog topped with cheese and bacon) and the Philly combo, featuring a hot dog and fish cake together on the same bun for $3.50. A crab cake version is also available for $4.50. Ideal for parties and families (or just hungry patrons), Texas Wieners offers specials on hot dogs ordered in groups of 6, 10 or 21.
