Pat Toomey: Sanctuary Cities Diminish Our Security

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey spoke out again against sanctuary cities, telling Dom Giordano on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT they are a threat a Pennsylvania residents and things will change once Donald Trump takes office.

"Part of my job is the safety and security of the people that I represent. What we know for a fact is that sanctuary cities diminish our security. We know for a fact that with sanctuary cities, we release dangerous criminals back onto the streets when our federal immigration officials want to take them into custody and deport them. I don't think your status as having come to America illegally should grant you a special privilege."

He stated he is also aware of the latest trend of colleges and universities moving to protect undocumented immigrants.

"This seems to be a relatively new phenomenon to me. Very disturbing and schools seem to be coming down on different sides on this. We have some schools that have declared themselves to be sanctuary campuses, so they, apparently, intend not to cooperate with federal law enforcement with respect to these issues, detainers and information. Other schools have come out and said no, the rule of law is important and we're going to abide by it."

Toomey said he is anxious for Donald Trump to assume the Presidency next month so Republicans can begin to craft a response to these cites and schools around the country.

"The details really matter now because we're going to send legislation a President who is going to sign it. We're firing with live ammo now. We've got to get it right and I'm determined that we will. I'm excited about a very productive first six months and, hopefully, beyond."
