Thursday Nights at 9: Online Town Hall Meetings To Inspire Black Civic Engagement

By social media editor Melony Roy

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A group that calls itself the largest online civil rights organization will host a series of town hall meetings on Thursday nights, beginning tonight, on Twitter.

ColorOfChange.org is hosting the series of Twitter Townhalls beginning at 9pm each Thursday, during the commercial breaks of "Scandal."

"Part of our campaign is talking to black women about if other people speak for them at the  election, what happens  on the issues they care about?" says Color of Change executive director Rashad Robinson, "so, empowering people to speak in their own voice."

During each commercial break, ColorOfChange.org will pose a question surrounding one of several key issues such as income inequality, health care, or voter suppression.

"Scandal has been such an empowering and incredibly popular show with black folks in general and black women in particular," says Robinson, "and we wanted to enter the conversation around politics, culture, and family on a night when people are going to be watching TV."

You can follow the campaign on Twitter using the hashtag #IfTheySpeakForMe.
