Three-Year $151 Million Northeast Extension Project Set To Begin
BLUE BELL, Pa. (CBS) - Construction is set to begin in the next few days on a major reconstruction and widening project on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike through Montgomery County.
The three-year, $151 million project includes widening the toll road to six lanes on six miles of road between Mid-County and Berks Road. More than 65,000 cars use that stretch of road every day with an anticipated increase in traffic over the next several years.
State Representative Kate Harper says this project will make the road safer. "Just about two weeks ago I had a tire blowout," Harper said, "Luckily I was on the main turnpike, which has been widened. On this road it would be very dangerous and often is."
Crews will also replace and widen seven bridges along the way.Throughout the project, the turnpike will take steps to minimize traffic disruptions and delays.
The cost of the project is being paid for with toll revenue.The next phase of construction on four miles of road leading to the Lansdale interchange begins in 2014.
