Three Local Acme Stores To Close In December

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The owner of the Acme markets is planning to streamline operations as part of a nationwide cost cutting move that will include the closing of three stores in the Philadelphia region.
The combination of increasing competition, the economy, and declining business is prompting Super Valu Inc., the parent company of Acme, to close stores in Sharon Hill, Morrisville, and Glassboro in December. The aging stores are all considered under-performers by the owners' standards.
Shopper Cheryl Rupprect was saddened to hear that Acme was closing its doors in Morrisville, but says she's not surprised.
"I noticed that it was dead a lot in here lately. Not a lot of people. There's a lot of competition here. They have Pathmark, Giant right down the street, they have McAffrey's."
Fifty-seven other Acmes across the country are also on the hit list as Suprevalue attempts to cut into billions of dollars in debt.
Acme has a total of 113 stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland.
