Three Catholic Schools In Delco Set For Closure This Year
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It's become an annual rite in recent years around here: the Archdiocese of Philadelphia announcing the closure of schools due to declining enrollment.
This time around, though, parents at three Delaware County parochial schools are getting little warning.
Superintendent Mary Rochford confirms the closings of Our Lady of Charity School in Brookhaven (above) and St. Philomena in Lansdowne. She wouldn't identify the third, but there is an emergency meeting of parents scheduled for tomorrow night at St. Kevin in Springfield.
"The schools, at the time we made the decision in late May, had under 100 students re-registered in them, and we don't operate educationally schools that small," said Rochford.
Usually parents get a warning in April, but the continuing reëvaluation of schools throughout the Archdiocese, combined with the dire lack of students in these schools, required more prompt action.
That reëvaluation is expected to be complete in the fall.
