Thousands Take To Jersey Shore To Help Clean Up Beaches, Rivers And Bays
By David Madden
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (CBS) - Thousands of volunteers are taking to New Jersey's beaches, but not to get an early tan. They're part of an annual cleanup that gathers more than just trash.
The group Clean Water Action does this twice a year.
Sixty-five sites are set up statewide along beaches and more. Spokeswoman Lindsay McNamara says cleanups are also done along rivers and back bays.
"The volunteers go out and they have their bags for trash and their bags for recycling, but they also have a data card and they keep track of what they're finding," she explains.
That data goes into an annual report on the cleanliness of beaches.
Debris from Hurricane Sandy will certainly be in the next report, but you might be surprised how the refuse gets down the shore.
Storm runoff from inland areas eventually makes its way to the ocean, and carries trash with it.
