CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) -- Thousands turned out for the Cooper Norcross "Run the Bridge" event on Sunday.
It's one of the largest 10k races in the Tristate area and it's all for a good cause. The race benefits Larc School, a non-profit organization helping children with disabilities. Money raised by the event is used to buy specialized equipment and computers for their educational programs that benefit students in six South Jersey counties.
"This event has really helped raise awareness of the needs of the kids in special education, says Susan Weiner, executive Director of Larc School, "and the variety of children and the variety of needs."
"Run the Bridge" is an annual event that began in 2002. 5,000 Runners and walkers registered at Campbell's Field in Camden Sunday morning.
The race started at the toll gates in Camden, New Jersey. Participants crossed the Ben Franklin Bridge to the Philadelphia side, and then looped back across the span into Camden, ending at Campbell's Field.
"My goal is to have a really good time," says Dave Goldstein. "I'm pushing my son for the first time, so I'm not trying to get too emotional."
Dave Goldstein ran while pushing his son Josh - who is a student at Larc School.
"We love participating in events for the school," Goldstein says, "and this event is the biggest of them all and it's great. We are just so happy to be a part of it."
Organizers says the funds raised at the event are needed to provide services to hundreds of kids with specials needs in South Jersey.
"Everything that happens for any other child happens for the children at Larc School, we just meet their needs in specific ways."
The event closed the Ben Franklin Bridge for about two hours.
