Thousands Still Without Power In South Jersey After Violent Storms
By Dan Wing
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Utility crews were working feverishly to restore electrical service to thousands of customers in Southern New Jersey who were still without power late Sunday night, one day after severe thunderstorms ripped through the region, causing widespread damage and power outages.
As of midnight, Atlantic City Electric was still reporting more than 100,000 customers without power. A curfew remained in effect until 6 a.m. Monday.
Crews worked throughout the day, trying to undo the damage that Mother Nature had done to power lines and power switches.
The number of outages was cut by 20,000 on Sunday, but an Atlantic City Electric spokesman said it would take until at least mid-week for most power to be restored. Friday was the deadline for everything to return to normal.
Restoration efforts were aided by hundreds of resources and workers sent in from utility providers as far away as Florida.
The Red Cross did offer some shelters and cooling centers on Sunday to help residents affected by the storm. To find one near you, click here.
