Thousands Set Off On 60-Mile Walk To Raise Money For Breast Cancer
WILLOW GROVE, Pa. (CBS) – On Friday morning, thousands of people in the Greater Philadelphia area embarked on a three-day, 60-mile journey to fight cancer.
The Susan G. Komen Philadelphia 3-Day for the Cure kicked off at 7 a.m. with an opening ceremony at the starting point at the Willow Grove Park Mall.
Along the way, public cheering stations have been set up for members of the community to show their support. On Friday, the station is on Main Street in Manayunk (between Cotton and Gay Streets), and on Saturday, it will be at 204 Haverford Road in Wynnewood.
Finally, on Sunday, community supporters will cheer from the National Constitution Center as the walkers finish up their emotional journey with the closing ceremony at the Navy Yard.
The weekend-long walk for both men and women requires that participants raise a minimum of $2,300 and walk an average of 20 miles per day to educate others about breast cancer.
All funds raised from the Susan G. Komen 3-Day are donated to breast cancer research and community based breast health and education programs.
