Thousands Of Phillies Fans Make Trip To Pittsburgh For Opening Day
By Paul Kurtz
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Phillies may have opened their season on the road on Thursday, but in many respects they should've felt right at home in Pittsburgh.
The Pirates are often at the bottom of the league, in terms of their record and attendance. The Phillies, on the other hand, are living large. They not only sell out every home game, but they also draw huge crowds on the road.
A six hour drive was no sweat for fans like David Twer who travelled to the Steel city with his son, Sam, and got a jolt when he went down to the hotel lobby in the morning.
"Nothing but Phillies shirts," he said. "Forty people in the lobby, full of Phillies shirts."
They were all joined by thousands more at PNC Park.
"I thought there would be a lot of Phillies fans here, but they're even more predominant than I thought" added Twer. "We were here when the gates opened and there was really nothing but Phillies fans, so I'll say right now it's half and half."
A lot of fans arrived early to watch batting practice and search for autographs.
