Thieves Take Advantage Of Devastating Ice Storm In Radnor Township
RADNOR, Twp., Pa., (CBS) -- Radnor Police are warning residents to be on alert.
Thieves took advantage of the recent storm, burglarizing three homes that did not have power.
With yet another storm on the way, police are certainly concerned the thieves will do it again.
It was a crippling storm that knocked out power to more than 600,000 people in our region.
The loss of power and heat forced many people to leave their homes and seek shelter elsewhere.
And knowing that, burglars took full advantage.
Between Feb. 6th and Feb. 9th, three homes in Radnor Township were broken into.
"They were entering the houses in the late afternoon, early evening hours. They were forcing entry, they'd come in, go to the bedrooms, remove a fair amount of jewelry and then flee the residence," Lt. Andy Brock of Radnor Township Police said.
Some neighbors here on the 200 block of Berwind Road where one burglary occurred were able to stay in their homes thanks to generators they had.
"It's devastating just the fact that we were all here and a lot of people did stay at their houses. I think if someone would break into our house, I think that speaks very lowly of that person,"resident Jennifer O'Malley said.
Other homes were also targeted on the 300 block of Orchard Way and the 200 block of South Ithan Avenue.
Especially now with another storm on the horizon, Radnor Township Police are urging residents if you lose power and leave your homes, take your valuable jewelry with you and to notify police if you leave your home.
"We can put the residents on a vacant house watch where the officers will check it on a daily basis," Brock said.
In the meantime police here say they will be stepping up their patrols.
