PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Police arrested a homeless man they say is responsible for several burglaries of businesses in Philadelphia and Bucks County. The latest theft occurred Friday morning in Northeast Philadelphia.
Daniel Haggard, 44, is facing several charges after being arrested in the 5200 block of Frankford Avenue at about 8 a.m. Friday.
In the latest robbery, police allege Haggard smashed a window and entered the CVS Pharmacy located in the 9800 block of Bustleton Avenue at about 4 a.m. Friday. The store was closed at the time of the robbery.
Once inside, Haggard allegedly stole approximately 150 packs of cigarettes and then ran out of the store.
After fleeing, police say Haggard stole a van nearby, but later abandoned it. At about 8 a.m., Haggard was observed boarding a SEPTA bus. Officers converged on the bus and took him into custody. Authorities say he had a bag in his possession that contained cigarettes that were stolen from the CVS.
"This guy is a career criminal. His crimes date back to when he was 21-years-old so he's been in and out of jail most of his adult life and hopefully this is his last stop," said Fred Harran, Bensalem Public Safety director.
Haggard is currently being held in Philadelphia and will be formally charged with at least six burglaries. He is expected to be arraigned at a later time.
