Therapist In Philadelphia Credits Continuing Education For Allowing Her To Wear Many Hats For Her Practice

A career in psychology and social sciences can be very rewarding. Therapist, social worker, psychologist, counselor and assistant counselor are just a few of the positions you can seek with a degree in the field. Dr. Tina Paone, clinical director of the Counseling Center at Heritage in Montgomeryville, shares her journey on becoming a therapist and the degrees she earned to achieve the success she's had in the field of psychology and social sciences.

Can you describe your duties as a therapist?

"Each week, I wear several hats - that of a counselor, an educator and a manager. As a therapist, my duties include providing individual, couples' and family counseling. I also must maintain confidentiality and keep excellent records."

"In addition to counseling clients, I manage a team of 12 and oversee what's going on with my staff - as a therapist and as a business owner. I train each of my staff members in the methods we employ at the Counseling Center at Heritage, and also encourage them to take advantage of development opportunities as well."

Where did you get your degree?

"I received my Bachelor's degree in Psychology at the University of Tampa in Florida. I received my Master's degree in School Counseling at the University of Nevada, Reno. And I received my Doctorate degree (PhD) in Counselor Education & Supervision with a specialization in play therapy from the University of Nevada, Reno."

How has education prepared you for your career in psychology and social sciences?

"My education has been the foundation for my role. Without it, I would not have had a basis from which to start. As a counselor educator, I feel that the education we receive through undergraduate and graduate programs is most valuable. In my undergraduate program, I gained hands-on experience through curriculum, which really prepared me for my roles."

What continuing education is required for your role?

"I have several licenses and certificates that require continuing education. As part of my role as a therapist and counselor educator, I feel that it is important to always participate in continuing education."
