'The Voluntourist': Traveling To Work
By John Ostapkovich
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The summer season is coming to an end so maybe your next vacation is not front and center in your plans, but would you consider going someplace to work?
The Voluntourist is part memoir, part travelogue; the multinational adventures of Ken Budd, who did storm clean-up in New Orleans, taught English in Costa Rica and cared for orphans in Kenya.
This is not a call for you to do the same thing although he wouldn't mind and, in the end, you might not either.
"You can't go to these places and not feel differently, but sometimes you have to have distance from your life to really cherish your life, and that's one of the great things about travel is it does that. It pulls you from your routine. And that was something a gentleman I met in Costa Rica told me. He said, you only learn about yourself when you're outside your comfort zone and that's what I was trying to do," Budd explained.
Budd's two weeks in Costa Rica proved too short. Now that program is three months.
