The Philadelphia Police Department Honors Its Own
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia police have honored their own men and women who did their jobs, risked their lives and performed life-saving community service.
Officers Sean McCaffery (photo left) and Charles Mellon were flagged down near C and Allegheny, where a woman was in labor. Lights and siren on, they led the woman--a passenger in another car--to the hospital.
"As we got out of the car, Officer Mellon went over and observed literally a head coming out."
Officer Charles Mellon (photo left) acted instinctively, but what happened next was terrifying: "We cut the pants off. The baby came out, was blue-gray, and wasn't breathing."
And didn't breathe for a good five to eight seconds, though it seemed a lot longer.
"We turned the baby over, and the medics came over and cut the umbilical cord. By the time the doctors came out, we wrapped the baby up, and they took the baby inside. Actually right before they cut the umbilical cord the baby began to cry."
She was breathing, and next month, she will be one-year-old.
