The Mediterranean Diet
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It remains the most talked about diet of the past decade: the Mediterranean Diet clearly stays front and center because of its beneficial health effects -- especially in the battle against heart disease and stroke.
The Mediterranean Diet is certainly not a fad diet. It is a lifestyle endorsed by the Mediterranean culture and we have centuries of evidence that support it.
The Mediterranean Diet improves your cholesterol and reduces your chances of dying early. One of the biggest steps is to use olive oil instead of other fats and oils. Other parts of the diet that you should include are:
Eating less red meat, dairy products, eggs and poultry. Eating more fish, tree nuts vegetables and whole grains as well as drinking wine in moderation.
And that's the other key word with any diet or treatment plan -- moderation. When people run into larger issues it is when they deviate from that concept.
