The King and I ...
It turns out Arnold Palmer likes Atlantic City Country Club as much as I do.
When The King was celebrating a birthday several months ago, he decided to spend it at ACCC. He had walked those fairways many times as a young man, when he was serving in the Coast Guard in Cape May and would play Atlantic City in his down time. He also formed a strong bond with Leo Fraser, longtime owner of the club and who, as national president of the PGA of America, later turned to Arnie to help heal a rift between club professionals and touring pros, at that point keeping the tour under the PGA umbrella.
Personally, I love the entire experience at Atlantic City. It is hard to beat golf by the bay, and when you add in the historic clubhouse, that cool old locker room and the taproom, you always look forward to your next chance to play there. And it really says something when a man who is a part of that history, who has played the best courses all over the world, wants to return for a birthday bash.
