The Heat Is On

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- For the first time since September the temperature in Philadelphia climbed above 90 degrees. The mercury topped off at 93 this afternoon making today the hottest day of 2014 and the latest date to ever reach 90 or above in over a decade. The heat will continue into tomorrow and a Heat Advisory has been issued for the urban areas from Trenton to Philadelphia to Wilmington because heat indices (combination of heat and humidity) Wednesday afternoon will climb into the upper 90s. If you must be outside make sure to wear loose and light colored clothes, drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous activities.
Showers and thunderstorms will arrive late tomorrow night and will bring some relief to the heat. Thursday's high temperature will be in the upper 80s with storms but Friday will be much closer to average with sunshine and highs in the lower 80s.
The summer like pattern is well underway but Summer officially begins this Saturday, June 21 at 6:51AM. Saturday is also the day that will feature the longest daylight of the year. The Philadelphia area will have over 15 hours worth of daylight during the date of the Summer Solstice.
