The Days After Ice Storm Are Prime Time For Philadelphia Insurance Adjusters
By John McDevitt
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Insurance adjusters are working overtime around the Greater Philadelphia area, thanks to the recent ice storm.
"Mother Nature had a little hissy fit, and we are seeing a lot of crazy stuff out there," says Tony Hoffman, owner of Ace Public Adjusters, in Northeast Philadelphia.
"The 'Act of God' old wives' tale is a word that some insurance companies use, but most gods wouldn't dump a lot of snow and ice on people," he adds with a chuckle.
Hoffman says that with most policies food spoilage in your fridge due to a long-term power outage is covered. And he advises those forced out of their homes to look for the "additional living" clause in your policy, which will cover the cost of a hotel room.
And with roof damage, he advises, it's important to prevent any further damage. He says to remove trees and limbs that are hanging, and then put a tarp up to prevent water from entering the home.
He says to take photos and otherwise document your property damage.
